Gibson Les Paul

GIBSON LES PAUL ARTIST - ERIC CLAPTON

Ironically for a player now so thought of as a Fender Stratocaster player Eric Clapton helped bring the Gibson Les Paul back into fashion.

By the begining of the 1960's the Gibson Les Paul had ceased production, intially replaced by the new shape of the Gibson SG, it could be said if Eric Clapton hadn't chosen the Les Paul to produce his tone the guitar may never have been seen again.

Through the 1960's Clapton was mainly a Gibson man (he had used a Fender Telecaster during his stint in the Yardbirds), and the album that was to change music history was no different - John Mayall's Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton (or the Beano album) saw Clapton team up the Gibson Les Paul with the Marshall JTM-45 45-watt model-1962 Marshall 2-12" combo amp.

Clapton bought the Les Paul around 1965 in London, it was a used Les Paul Standard thought to be either from 1958, '59 or '60 model and a new sound was born. The thick humbucker equiped Paul through the distorted Marshall amp, that Clapton used to play the blues became the starting point for heavy rock & metal.

The Blues Breakers Les Paul was stolen from Clapton during the early days of Cream. Clapton then moved to other Gibson guitars the psychodelic finished SG, ES-335 and Firebird till he made the switch to Fender Stratocasters in 1970.
